Crowdsourcing and Ballet?

Posted by mneeley on March 23, 2013 in Social Media |

When you hear the word “Ballet” what is it that you picture in your head immediately? I am writing this post to share my daughter’s story. My daughter has been dancing ballet since the age of 3 but decided to focus on ballet at the age of 13. I have never seen a child with so much passion in her eyes and heart for the love of classical ballet.

I was a dancer in my youth, but however never enjoyed ballet. I loved Jazz so when my daughter told me the she solely wanted to focus on ballet I listened. I switched her to an all ballet studio. My daughter has been attending the arts school since elementary school. Leah had her first role in the “Community Nutcracker” as a “Party Girl” I had no clue what a big deal that was at that time when she was 11 years old. Leah definitely has what it takes to be and do what she wants. I always tell her to dream big and most of all follow your passion.

Leah has worked so hard she studies all the ballets on youtube. I never knew until recently how she can just hear a classical song and tell you what ballet piece and the name. I love it! The whole point of this post is to share with you that my daughter auditioned and was accepted into Nutmeg Ballet Conservatory and Interlochen Center for the Arts Ballet summer intensives. Up until this point I’ve been able to support my daughter’s ballet expenses, but now she is a junior in high school and this summer is really important. Why you might ask. This is a crucial time because Leah has decided that she wants to audition for ballet companies when she graduates high school instead of going to college.

I support her 100% because in ballet you have to start young and you just have one shot. College will always be there. It’s rare to find a young african-american girl that has so much love, joy, and passion for a craft called ballet. I don’t want her to stop dreaming due to my lack of finances. I decided that I would reach out to the world to help me help fund my daughter’s ballet summer intensives so that she can get the same extensive training as her peers that are well-off and able to fund their children’s ballet intensive.

Unfortunately, to receive this type of training it’s costly, but I still have hope that she will be able to attend. I am reaching out to my fans and followers and want to ask you to help me help my future ballerinas dream come alive this summer. I don’t want her to give up due to me being a single mother. I feel in my heart that I have birthed and raised such an outstanding young lady with self-discipline and a spirit that is just so lively that I cannot help to reach out to the world so that she can one day become that ballerina she has always dreamed of becoming.

Diversity is important to me as well when it comes to the future of ballet and if you’re not too familiar with ballet there are not too many black ballerina’s in leading roles. Leah has been blessed to be mentored by one of the first african-american ballet soloist of the American Ballet Theatre Misty Copeland. Now that speaks volumes on my daughter’s potential. She receives guidance from a professional who has been in the field for so long and has also shared Leah’s story. Let’s all come together and support our youth that have BIG dreams. Let’s not see them lose hope.

If you would like to help leah please click here to donate and learn more about here. We have raised $580 this far and we have to meet the goal of $6000 by May 1st. I’m only asking for $2. Can you spare $2? It takes a village to raise a child and in this case I am reaching out to my tribe. Let’s Do This! #TeamLeah

Thank you for your support in advance! xoxo
